Happy Independence Day!
As I celebrate today I remember that America is a miracle. When the colonists were fighting for freedom the odds were against them. They were outnumbered and outgunned. The rational choice for the colonist was to stay home and not try. We celebrate today because they ignored the odds. They stood on principal. Many gave their lives because they would rather die than live under tyranny.
Independence day reminds us that the harder the battle the sweeter the victory. We still celebrate this day because America is such a miracle. Our government was created to defend freedom of the individual, not the rulers. That had never happened before in all of human history. That new idea created a society that attracted the most adventurous people in the world. America prospered and became a world leader because the fundamental purpose of government was changed. This new idea is reflected in our Declaration of Independence and our Constitution.
Today as we drift further and further from this idea that government exists to defend freedom, our prosperity fades. As we celebrate the miracle of our independence from the tyranny of King George, we must re-dedicate ourselves to the fight against tyranny from our own government. Our government must be reminded that its sole purpose for existence is to defend freedom.
I hope we all enjoy this day and use it to re-energize ourselves, so that we can win the fight before us. Like our ancestors, we will win our battle, and the victory will be sweet.
